The Need for Small and Medium-Sized Biogas Plants on Farms
Farms with small and medium-sized biogas plants are experiencing significant interest from farmers and others regarding their facility expansions.
Producers who are planning new facilities, those who have recently initiated facilities, and those who have had facilities in operation for some time provide an introduction to investors, researchers, businesses, students, advisors, and other individuals interested in understanding what it entails to plan, construct, and operate a biogas plant. This process develops new expertise for investment in this type of biogas facility, expertise that is shared with all stakeholders.
Gaute Måøy
Gaute is a farmer in Nærøysund. He experienced what could have been a tragedy, but instead became a new beginning. In the early 2000s, Måøy saw his life's work shatter as a landslide sent the barn straight into Lake Horvereid. However, he and two others began a cooperative effort. They erected a new, large, and modern barn, and with a substantial milk quota, he started anew. Måøy has recently launched a farm-based biogas facility, and he will share his experiences from the startup process.
Jørn Magne Vaag
At Mediaas Søndre, there are plans to establish a biogas plant. It all started with a desire for greater energy self-sufficiency and an assessment of solar cell installations. Jørn Magne Vaag, a farmer in Snåsa, will share his thoughts and experiences from the initial idea phase to the planning of the new biogas plant.
Roar Svanem
The raw materials for Roar Svanem's plant and his collaborators at Svanem Biogass are livestock manure from 12 farmers in the area and sludge from 5 nearby land-based fish farms. The products from the facility include biogas that can be used for transportation or electricity production for the farm and the local area, as well as biogas fertilizer that will be distributed to the contributing farmers. Entrepreneur Roar Svanem believes that this concept could benefit multiple farms and communities. He provides an overview of what it takes to build and operate a biogas plant of this kind.
